Building a Deck? Make Sure It's Safe

When adding a deck to your home it’s important that safety is your number one priority. The last thing you want to happen is for your deck to collapse while someone is using it after all. The following are the steps to take to safely attach your deck to your home:

You need to make sure your ledger board is attached to the structure of your home with the use of mechanical fasteners. If its not, then you’ll need to jack your deck back up and temporarily hold it against the house using stakes and braces. This will allow you to lift the deck up using temporary posts.

You’ll then want to drill lag bolts into the top of the ledger. Once this is done, you’ll need to drill holes near the bottom of the ledger into the foundation. After this is done, you’ll want to drive in your masonry fastener. If there is space between the ledger and the foundation, then you should fit filler pieces into the space.
