How to Stabalize Irregular Shaped Blanks for Turning

Sometimes the most beautiful turned pieces can come from the most oddly shaped blanks. That’s why it’s important to know how you can stabilize irregular shaped blanks, such as sow’s ears, onto your lathe. First, you will want to cut the blank to fit on the lathe and to expose any cracks that may exist on the outer surface. Fill in the cracks using a CA, cyanoacrylate, glue. This glue is thin, dries fast and is strong enough to fill cracks and strengthen any soft spots in the blank so that it will stand up to lathe turning. Then, even when you start turning, stop frequently to check for newly exposed cracks and to fill them in with glue.
