How To Stain Rough-Cut Lumber

Give rough-cut lumber a new and finished look by applying a stain before you begin your project. Staining rough-cut lumber is different from staining traditional lumber, so be sure to use the right method.

Here is what you will need for the staining project:

* Large tarp

* Large bucket

* Paintbrush

* Warm water

* Hard-bristled scrub brush

* Pressure washer

* Rubber gloves

* Breathing mask

* Sandpaper

* Staining solution

Step 1

Find a well-ventilated area to do the staining. Setting up in a garage with the garage door open may work, but setting up outdoors is preferable. Protect yourself from harmful fumes by wearing rubber gloves and a paper breathing mask. Lay the tarp on your work surface to avoid damage from spills.

Step 2

Clean the rough-cut lumber with a bristled brush and warm water or pressure washer if outdoors. Allow the washed lumber to dry completely then go over it with sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

Check out Step 3 for instructions on how to apply the stain when you are ready, and contact Schutte Lumber if you have any questions.
