Check out this beautifully crafted strip-planked wooden kayak built by one of Schutte Lumber Company’s customers using some of our exotic and specialty hardwoods.

For the customer’s first-ever woodworking project, they purchased a boatbuilding kit from Chesapeake Light Craft Boats, which also offers boatbuilding tips and boatbuilding classes. The kit was for a single-seated cedar kayak, but the customer used four different woods to create the strip-planking: padouk, maple, mahogany, and birch. The kayak took 8 months to complete. As any woodworker knows, the craft is catchy, and this customer is actively looking for his second woodworking project.

This feature is part of our blog series designed to recognize the wood craftsmen in our community. Schutte Lumber Company recently called for submissions of woodworking projects local to Kansas City for possible inclusion on our blog. Send us your woodworking project photos and a brief description, and you could be featured on our blog too! Entries may be e-mailed to Stacy Fyock at S_Fyock@SchutteLumber.com.
