Tips for Getting the Look of Aged Wood for Your Projects

There’s something about the look of aged wood that gives it so much more character than non-aged wood. It’s a rustic quality that provides warmth and beauty. However, you may not be able to use actual aged wood for your project. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can give your wood a more worn look.

When buying wood, skip over the traditional boards, which tend to be smoothed down on every side. Instead, ask for rough-sawn boards, which have uneven surfaces. You can then give the wood the look of wear and tear by simply whacking the boards using a hammer. When you finish the wood with stain, use a black stain on the indented areas to make it look like spots of oxidation.

You can also create a finish that helps make the wood look older. Combine ¾ cup of  vinegar with ¼ cup of rusty nails and let it sit for a day. Once you apply it to the wood, it will mimic the look of weathering that usually takes years to occur.
