Make Your Own Workbench

If you enjoy woodworking, then you’re going to want a workbench to work on. Why not combine your joy for woodworking with your need for a workbench by building your very own workbench? The following are a few tips to help you do just that:

Remember that a workbench is different than a worktable. A worktable may have a vise bolted on top, but a workbench is meant to accommodate several workholding mechanisms, including hold fasts, bench dogs, board jacks, vises and planning stops.

When building your bench, consider using three layers of ¾-inch medium density fiberboard topped and edged with ¼-inch hardboard to create the top. This is probably the most affordable top you can make, but if you want a little more durability go with two layers of ¾-inch medium density hardboard and ½-inch oak that’s then topped with 1 ½-inch oak Ikea countertop. Form the base using 4×4 legs along with 2×4 stretchers and connect them using dowels and truss rods.

Make sure that you use these tips in order to build your own workbench. If you are looking for more workshop-related tips and ideas, then be sure to contact us at Schutte Lumber today.
