Corbels Add Character
Posted On June 21, 2012
A corbel is a piece of wood or masonry that jutts out of a wall to carry a weight. Corbels have been used a lot in architecture lately, as these images from notable design magazines demonstrate:
- House Beautiful showed this carved corbel over a stove in a French Country-style kitchen in Connecticut. The design, selected by interior designer Beverly Ellsley. has a traditional harvest motif.
- Southern Living showed that corbels can be used for purely decorative purposes, as in this garden, where corbels are used as a bench. Accoridng to Southern Living, the detailed antique English corbels look ” like two giant bookends.”
- This Old House celebrated the original corbel in a Queen Anne home in Collingswood, New Jersey.
